Amsterdam Marionette Theatre to Stage AROUND CHRISTMAS: THE CASTLE IN THE AIR, Nov 24-Dec 29

Amsterdam Marionette Theatre, since 1985, has carried on the European tradition of the classicAl Marionette theatre (www.marionettetheatre.com). The next production will be Around Christmas: The Castle in the Air (No. 66!) by Jacques Offenbach.

Op0E9ra-comique set in the French country-side. Catchy melodies, humour and a touch of melancholy form the ingredients of this 2018follie musicale2019, as Offenbach himself liked to call this genre.

The story is about Jeannot and Jeannette, who are on their way to Paris. They earn their living with dance and song. When they meet a pedlar who displays his products, Jeannot can no longer resist the temptation. He buys a lottery ticket to be able to buy all these beautiful things. When it turns out he has become a millionaire, he seems to lose not only his dear Jeannette, but also his ideals...

Jacques Offenbach wrote 'No. 66!' (The Castle in the Air) in 1856 for his own small theatre, the Bouffes Parisiens. Kings, merchants and artists visited this wooden auction hall at the Champs-Elys0E9es in Paris. Now, this unknown op0E9ra-comique can be seen in a former blacksmith's - the theatre of the Amsterdam Marionette Theatre.

A performance for both adults and children (min. 6 yrs.) of approx. 1 0BD hr (a short interval included). Six puppeteers manipulate the large, wooden marionettes, dressed in their costumes of silk. In Amsterdam, 'The Castle in the Air' ('Het Luchtkasteel') will be performed in Dutch, but because of the musical and visual character of the performance, there is no serious barrier of language. We provide a programme of the performance in English.
