The Belcourt Theatre, 2102 Belcourt Ave. Nashville, TN 37212 (615) 846-3150 hosts Weekend Classics: GUYS AND DOLLS

Damon Runyon's Manhattan short stories became the hit broadway play which beget this sterling cinemascope rendering. Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra), who maintains the "Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York.", is seeking a location and $1000 for his latest game.

He decides to extract the money from high-rolling Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando), known for his willingness to bet on anything. Nathan wagers that Sky will not be able to talk a virginal Salvation Army lass into going on a date with him.

That money might pay for the Biltmore garage, but the Salvation Army may have to do...Though the singing Brando and acting Sinatra were famously at odds with each other, the mix of star power and veterans from the show's theatrical run makes for a one-two punch of Broadway skill and Hollywood glamour and one of the richest scores to spring from Broadway to Hollywood includes such classic songs as "Luck Be a Lady." --Dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1955, 150min

***Post screening discussion following the noon screening on Sunday will be facilitated by Jim Lovensheimer, assistant professor of musicology at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. Long active in professional theatre productions, his research specialty is the American musical.
