Tennessee Rep Kicks Off Season of Workshops on October 5

By:

Tennessee Repertory Theatre kicks off its season of workshops with two "opportunities for the growth of your artistic minds and bodies." Robert Kiefer and Carol Ponder will be the instructors for "Tableaux: Artful Specificity,"" while Pam Atha, Rod Reiner and Bruce Stegmann will teach a "Musical Theatre Dance Series in Jazz and Tap."

"Tableaux: Artful Specificity" will be conducted on Monday, October 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. According to a press release from Tennessee Rep: "Tableaux are windows into the world of theatre. Relying mostly on body language and physical interpretations of events and emotions rather than words, they're often less intimidating than other types of improvisatory theatre work. They also allow actors and directors-inexperienced or old hands-the opportunity to experience or remember what it feels like to make very specific choices about posture, breath, gesture, center-of-gravity placement, balance, focus, and intention: things that make the difference between a stellar and an adequate performance.

"Participants will be guided through several types of tableaux (single, sequential, moving, with and without words) starting from various stimuli (photographs, paintings, and abstract concepts). Directors and Actors will take away new habits of mind and body to help them create their next on-stage characters in vivid, revealing detail."

A maximum of 20 participants will be allowed to take part in the workshop. The cost is $35.

The "Music Theatre Dance Series" will begin on Monday, October 5 and continue through Monday, November 9. Class time is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. each Monday, with a maximum of 30 participants. Cost is $15 per session or $75 for all six clases.

According to Tennessee Rep, "In this exciting dance workshop series, participants will have the opportunity to work with three top class choreographers on Musical Theatre Jazz and Tap. Participants will learn technique and musical theatre style combinations. October 5 and 19, Rod Reiner will lead Musical Theatre Jazz. On October 12, Pam Atha will teach a Fosse style of Musical Theatre jazz. And Bruce Stegmann will teach his own session of Musical Theatre Jazz on October 26, followed by Tap on November 2 and 9."

The October 5, 12 and 19 dance classes will be held at the Nashville School of the Arts dance studio, 1250 Foster Avenue. October 26, November 2 and November 9 classes will be held at the rehearsal studio at Gary Musick Proudcitons, 885 Elm Hill Pike in Nashville.
