Membership Week at The Frist Center for the Visual Arts Celebrates SENSUOUS STEEL: ART DECO AUTOMOBILES, Now thru 8/30

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts will host a membership week from today, August 25-30 celebrating the exhibition Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles with member-only hours, a "Hoods Up!" event, and the final evening of the Frist Friday summer series featuring DRIVIN' 'N CRYIN'. Non-members are encouraged to become members of the Frist Center to participate in these exciting events. Join on site at any of these events.

The Frist Center is the only venue for Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, which includes 18 cars and two motorcycles from some of the most important auto collectors and collections in the United States. Inspired by the Frist Center's own historic Art Deco building, the exhibition features spectacular automobiles that exemplify the classic elegance, luxurious materials and iconography of motion that characterized vehicles influenced by the Art Deco style.

Sunday, August 25

The week will kick off with member-only hours from 10 a.m. to noon. Frist Center members will have the galleries to themselves to leisurely explore the feature exhibitions Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, Jack Spencer: Beyond the Surface and Vik Muniz: Garbage Matters.

Tuesday, August 27

The Frist Center will host a one-time Hoods Up! event from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at which members will have the opportunity to look under some of the hoods and inside some of the interiors of the automobiles on display in Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles. There will be a jazz trio, a cash bar and a selection of light food.

Only current Frist Center members may attend this event (member guest passes will not be accepted). To attend the ?Hoods Up!? event, current members should make a reservation at least 48 hours in advance by calling the member hotline at 615.744.3248.A number of the automobile lenders and owners have granted the Frist Center permission to open the hoods and doors. On hand to discuss the automobiles will be the following Middle Tennessee automotive authorities:

Mark Lambert, automotive historian, Lambert Auto, world renowned authority on historic restoration. Jeff Lane, president, Lane Motor Museum, lender to the exhibition and famed collector of more than 300 unique European vehicles.

Tim Marinos, principal, Vintage Autocraft and former working manager of the highly respected restoration firm, Paul Russell and Company.

Friday, August 30

The American southern rock band DRIVIN' 'N CRYIN' will close out the member week-as well as the Frist Fridays summer concert series-with a full-throttled roar. DRIVIN' 'N CRYIN' crafts songs that blend hard rock riffs with country and Americana melodies. The band is featured in a documentary film directed by Eric Von Haessler titled ?Scarred but Smarter: (life n times of drivin n cryin)? tracing the ups and downs of the band's 28-year career and narrating the life of a rock band in a 20th century setting. Members Free/Visitors $10.
