On March 5-7, the electrifying cast of American Idiot took the stage at TPAC's Andrew Jackson Hall. The musical, which was inspired, written, and created by Billie Joe and Green Day, is a satisfying change from the typical Broadway show.

Passion, rage, and love are a few themes presented in this powerful display. From the first lyric-screamed song, to the bold set design, the tone is apparent as soon as the curtain rises.

Johnny, Tunny and Will are ready to escape the post 9/11 suburbia where they currently reside, and experience the world in a different way. Unfortunately for Will, his plans change when he is forced to stay home after learning of his girlfriend's pregnancy.

After arriving in the big city, Tunny decides to pursue a different type of career when he is influenced by military propaganda. Roaming the streets alone and restless, Johnny become enamored with a girl called Whatsername. This romance is short-lived due to the appearance of St. Jimmy- the enticingly dangerous drug dealer. Played by the impressive Trent Saunders, St. Jimmy causes Johnny to spiral out of control and forces him to get his life back in shape.

In a homecoming which could only be a product of destruction and resurrection, the three friends are reunited. They are slightly battered and bruised, but together nonetheless.

American Idiot, the album, was a raw and powerful display in itself. Billie Joe wrote the soundtrack almost as a theatrical experience through song.

An excellent ensemble complements the anthems, adding a full and powerful voice to the music. As every voice in the cast rises, so do the goosebumps on the arms of the audience.

However, as with any live show there can be a few mishaps. During one of the songs, a few microphones were cut off on some ensemble members. Although not completely noticeable, fans of Green Day who are aware of the words could have been caught off-guard by the sudden absence of lyrics. This was handled beautifully by the cast. They held their composure and never broke character.

Violent and honest, "American Idiot" leaves crowds in awe. The passion which runs through the veins of this musical is truly inspiring. It is comparable to a religious experience- one which could only be attained while in the presence of the Jesus of Suburbia.
