Amun Ra's THE COLORED MUSEUM Closes 7/4

By:

George C. Wolfe's acclaimed The Colored Museum is now onstage at Nashville's Amun Ra Theatre, continuing the company's 2010 season hot off the heels of the production of Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog.

Opening Thursday, June 17, The Colored Museum runs through July 4. Shows are Thursday through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Directed by company founder and artistic director Jeff Obafemi carr, the cast includes David Arnell, Kenetha Carr, David Chattam, Nomalanga Eniafe, Alicia Haymer, Dannise Warrick and Vera Warrick.

The Colored Museum premiered in 1986 at the Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and has entertained and enlightened audiences worldwide with its sharp and satirical examination of the African-American Experience.

The play takes place aboard an airplane, the flagship of Celebrity Slaveship airlines, that transports the audience through various eras of American history, stopping at various benchmarks including slavery and the 1960s, and explores - with side-splitting satire - the joys, pains, and contradictions of being African-American and what that means in today's world.

People all over the world tend to lose themselves in laughter as they hear from the live "Exhibits" in The Colored Museum including: "Git On Board" with Miss Pat' "Cookin' With Aunt Ethel"; "The Soldier With a Secret" with Junie B. Jones; and "The Last Mama-On-The-Couch Play," which skewers such plays as Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun.

Performances will be held at the Amun Ra Theatre Playhouse, 2508 Clifton Avenue; the 50-seat black box theater features a box office, dressing rooms, an administrative office, storage and a lobby/lounge.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/115847 or by phone at (800) 838-3006. Groups of 15 or more receive discounted tickets. For further details, call (615) 329-4228. Because of some of the issues dealt with in this show, it is recommended to ages 13 and up; parents should exercise their discretion.
