The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin (Academy for Ancient Music Berlin) is arguably the best period-instrument ensemble active today. Who could have predicted this when, over thirty years ago, a group of young East Berlin enthusiasts, students, orchestra musicians and instrument makers got together to found East Germany’s first early-music band. Having never lost the endearing passion and curiosity of their youth, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has sold over 1 million recordings worldwide, a sure sign of their lasting success. Their Montreal programme includes such favourites as Johann Sebastian Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in F minor and his lovely wedding cantata, Weichet nur betrübte Schatten.
