Phantom Chorus Theatre presents Razia’s Shadow: A Puppet Rock Opera
a fantastical tale told through puppetry & song, full of wild characters and eye-popping spectacle
SAINT PAUL, MN. – In 2019, a rag tag group of theatre artists performed “Razia’s Shadow: A Puppet Rock Opera” on a stage barely bigger than a card table, in a tiny South Minneapolis theatre (that doubled as a Martial Arts studio). A few years later, they would come together again to form Phantom Chorus Theatre. And now, after 7+ shows together, it’s time to dust off this Ancient Tome and bring this epic, fantastical, musical journey back to life – bigger and better than ever before.
Razia’s Shadow: A Puppet Rock Opera tells the story of a world divided in two by the selfish actions of the powerful yet insecure Ahrima. After generations of darkness, his descendant Adakias seeks to reunite the two fractured halves and return harmony to the world. The show features the talents of 10 amazing puppeteers/vocalists, and over a dozen unique puppet characters – including a vengeful Satyr, a gigantic technicolor Spider, a pair of reptilian Witch Sisters, a mechanical Mad Doctor, and more!
“Razia’s Shadow is such a deeply meaningful piece of art to me,” explains director Marc Berg. “It found me as an aimless college student, in its original form as an album by the band Forgive Durden. My discovery of this amazing, complex, and beautifully weird story coincided with a burgeoning passion for puppetry. It was like lightning struck, I made it into a puppet rock opera for my senior thesis project and never looked back. When I got the chance to mount it professionally in 2019, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring the show even closer to the version that lived in my head – live vocals, bigger and better puppets, shadow puppetry sequences, and more! And now, with the help of my incredible team of Phantoms, I have the chance to truly make it the jaw-dropping spectacle it always deserved to be. We’re not holding anything back! As Ahrima says, “Let my unique deft hands be known!””
