Northrop at the University of Minnesota presents Aszure Barton & Artists on Sat, Nov 12 at 8:00 pm. The company led by Canadian Aszure Barton, who Mikhail Baryshnikov said is "one of the most innovative choreographers of this generation," will make its Twin Cities debut.
As the founder of a company that seeks to "embrace risk and vulnerability to create work that is universal, intimate, and entertaining," it is no surprise that Aszure Barton is one of the most sought-after choreographers today, having created works for not only the legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov, but renowned companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, American Ballet Theatre, and English National Ballet, just to name a few. Her works have toured to six continents, and this November Aszure Barton & Artists is making Northrop one of its stops. The show is a beautiful dance performance, but a full-on production incorporating the humor, sensuality, athleticism, and quirkiness that have become Barton's trademarks. The company will perform Awáa (meaning 'one who is a mother' in the language of Haida Gawaii), a piece complete with video projections inspired by an underwater dream, and an original score of soaring strings and soulful tribal drumming composed by Curtis Macdonald and Lev Zhurbin. The Washington Post says the piece is "an extraordinary work, full of fantasy and surprises." This mesmerizing production, so shockingly human, is grounded in familiar behaviors and interprets the ups and downs of life's creation in a hauntingly relatable way. Set under an overarching sense of beauty, the human frailty demonstrated throughout this piece will leave audiences awe-struck and wanting more.Videos
