Who Wants Cake? Hosts THE BOYS IN THE BAND Reading 12/6

By:

Who Wants Cake? is pleased to announce their staging of a one-time reading of Mart Crowley's landmark play, The Boys in the Band.

The single performance will take place on Sunday, December 6 at 2:00PM. The reading will be immediately followed by a talkback with the actors and director.

The Boys in the Band reading will take place at The Ringwald Theatre located at 22742 Woodward Ave, Ferndale, MI 48220. Donations will be accepted at the door.

The cast will be as follows: Jeff Bobick (Shelby Township), Jerry Haines (Berkley), Vince Kelley (Roseville), Jeremy Kucharek (Detroit), Dan Morrison (Ann Arbor), Richard Payton (West Bloomfield), Joe Plambeck (Ferndale), John Prakapas (Royal Oak), and Jamie Richards (Birmingham). Joe Bailey (Ferndale) will direct.

The Boys in the Band began its original New York run in April of 1968 and ran for 1,000 performances. A subsequent film adaptation opened in 1970 and was also deemed a success. In 1996 an off-Broadway revival featured David Drake and Christopher Sieber. Mart Crowley's landmark play was the first of its kind to show gay men as something more than off-stage suicides and whispered about distant relations. These men were in your face, full-bodied homosexuals with a capital H. As time has passed, however, some public opinion has changed about the way the characters are presented: too queeny, too bitchy, too mean, too self-loathing. It is time to revisit these Boys and explore how they have changed, for better or for worse.

Who Wants Cake? opened the doors to their resident home, The Ringwald, in May 2007 with Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy. Quickly, The Ringwald became a mainstay of Detroit's theatre community. Their first season offered up slice after slice of successful shows including Southern Baptist Sissies, Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical, Bug, The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode, The Bad Seed, Killer Joe, Rent, and Evil Dead: The Musical.

Who Wants Cake? was named the 2008and 2009 Best Theatre Group in Channel 4's Vote 4 The Bestcontest.
