Theatre and Dance at Wayne continues their 2017-2018 season with an edgy staging of Tennessee Williams' classic drama "A Streetcar Named Desire." Experience the drama and suspense of the production which opens Friday, November 3rd at the Hilberry Theatre.

Southern Belle Blanche DuBois is struggling to let go of past demons. Her dreamy approach to life has left her with no option but to move to New Orleans to live with her younger sister, Stella, and brother-in-law, Stanley. Tensions flare between brash and boisterous Stanley and delicate, old-fashioned Blanche. In the fight to protect herself and Stella, we see Blanche's inventiveness and inner strength. However, Stanley and Blanche's intense booze-fueled confrontations lead to a tragic and unpredictable ending.

Director David Magidson says the play "investigates love, sex, change, mental health, and people living in a rapidly developing reality that often destroys its own past instead of merging it with the new future. It is a heart-rending description of what civilization often leaves behind in its drive toward the future." Stanley Kowalski, famously played on screen by Marlon Brando, is a complex and difficult role. Third-year graduate acting student Nick Stockwell, who plays Stanley, adds that "World War II had just ended, and while it is easy to immediately paint Stanley as a terrible person, we must remember that he likely experienced many horrors during the war." The clash between Blanche and Stanley derives from their opposing approaches to dealing with tragedy. Blanche retreats into a fantasy world, meanwhile Stanley grounds himself in realism.

Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize winning "A Streetcar Named Desire" is an audience favorite which has stood the test of time, and Theatre and Dance at Wayne offers an opportunity to explore the play in brand new ways. Tickets are available online at www.theatreanddanceatwayne.com, or by phone at (313) 577-2972. A convenience fee of $2 per ticket is automatically added to your ticket when purchasing online.
