The New McCree Theatre Presents A RAISIN IN THE SUN, Now thru 5/19

By:

The New McCree Theatre presents A Raisin in the Sun from tonight May 3rd through May 19th.

When Lorraine Hansberry's classic, A Raisin in the Sun, made its debut on Broadway in March 1959, it marked the first time a play written by a Black woman played the "Great White Way." It was also the first play on Broadway directed by a Black director, Lloyd Richards.

A Raisin in the Sun gives its audience a glimpse into an ordinary Black family trying to achieve some semblance of the American Dream in racially segregated Chicago in the 1950's.

All of the family members agree that the $10,000 insurance payment received following the death of the family patriarch should be used towards that end. The only problem, however, is that each family member has a different idea as to what that pursuit should be.

The play received the New York Drama Critics Award in 1959 and was nominated for four Tony Awards. The Broadway production featured Sidney Poitier and Claudia McNeil. A move version of the play also featured Poitier in the leading role. The film version was nominated for Golden Globe Awards, and Ruby Dee won a National Board of Review award for best supporting actress.

The "New" McCree Theatre's production features Henri Watkin's return to the McCree Theatre stage. It also features Stuart Elzy, Cassandria Wilson, Tameka Duncan, John Vincent, and Shayla Blade. It is directed by Cathy E. Johnson.

Performances begin May 3 and run through May 19, on Thursdays and Fridays at 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. Advance admission is $12.00 for adults and $7.00 for students and senior citizens. At-the-door prices are $15 and $10. Tickets can be purchased at the theatre box office, 5005 Cloverlawn Drive, or online at www.thenewmccreetheatre.com. McCree Theatre, in partnership with King's Banquet Center, has arranged a dinner theatre special for guests.

An adult can partake of dinner and a performance for the single price of $20.00, or $15.00 for students and seniors. $15.00 per person is the dinner-theatre price for all groups of 10 or more. Call the theatre at (810) 787-2200 to make arrangements.
