The Hinterlands to Present THE CIRCUIT Variety Show, Begin. 9/26

Detroit-based physical theatre company The Hinterlands will present The Circuit, an ecstatic variety show for the outcasts of the Internet age, at Play House (preview) Thurs-Fri Sept 26-27 at 8PM and at Trinosophes, Thur-Fri October 3-4 at 8:00 PM. From the company that took you to the "Wild Midwest" with their 2011 psychedelic Western Manifest Destiny! (there was blood on the saddle) comes this high-octane-seize-no-prisoner take on another uniquely American entertainment - Vaudeville. Called "the heart of American show business," Vaudeville is remembered as the variety show that unleashed dancers, musicians, comedians, trained animals, female and male impersonators, acrobats, children, and lecturing celebrities onto a single bill. Vaudeville was also the place where different parts of the American subculture first met, eyed each other warily, and commenced the give-and-take that defines the American experiment. With jitters and juggalos, candy ravers and riot grrrls, The Circuit checks in on this grand experiment one century later in this hilarious and strange new work that brings Vaudeville into the post-industrial age. Think the Marx Brothers meets David Lynch meets the New Dance Show meets Bikini Kill meets something you've never heard of. With door prizes. And Faygo.

The Circuit will tour to Milwaukee, WI after its Detroit premier as a part of the Alverno Presents Performance Series and then to Legion Arts of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Future tours of The Circuit are in the works for Chicago (IL), Boston (MA) and Austin (TX) as well as additional Detroit performances in 2014.

An original performance by The Hinterlands, The Circuit is conceived and directed by Richard Newman and Liza Bielby, designed by ZeB Smith, with choreography by Haleem 'Stringz' Rasul and Torri Ashford, and sound design by Jon Brumit and Richard Newman. Performers include Richard Newman, Liza Bielby, Barney Baggett, Haleem Rasul, Torri Ashford, and Jon Brumit. Support for The Circuit provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the National Performance Network. The Circuit is a co-commission of Alverno Presents and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Additional support provided by Power House Productions.

The Hinterlands production of The Circuit will preview at Play House, 12657 Moran St., Detroit, MI, 48212 and premiere at Trinosophes, 1464 Gratiot Ave., Detroit, MI, 48207.
