Detroit-based physical theatre company, The Hinterlands, will present their original, site-specific, psychedelic Western, Manifest Destiny! (there was blood on the saddle), at the historic Jam Handy Film Studio August 4-6 and August 25-27 at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $15. For reservations please call 313.454.1756 or email info@thehinterlandsensemble.org.

Inspired by the larger-than-life figures of Billy The Kid, Calamity Jane, and Buffalo Bill, the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960's, and the imagery of writers Cormac McCarthy and William S. Burroughs, Manifest Destiny is equal parts Wild West Show and cultural scavenger hunt. Weaving spectacle, vaudevillian comedy, sing-alongs, pseudo-history, puppetry, feats of strength and skill, dreamlike imagery, and the smell of frying bacon into a highly physical sensory collage, Manifest Destiny blows the lid off the myths of the Old West and questions what it means to be American in the 21st Century. Audiences will explore the spaces of the historic Jam Handy Building - the lobby, the catwalks, the loading dock, the warehouse - in order to peek behind the facade of our own "Wild Midwest," both past and present, real and imagined. Did we mention there's a dancing bear? We did now.

After its premier in Detroit on August 4-6, Manifest Destiny! (there was blood on the saddle) will tour to Milwaukee, WI as a part of the Alverno Presents Performance Series. Then, Manifest Destiny returns to Detroit for one more weekend of performances August 25-27 before The Hinterlands head to China for a collaboration with the Shanghai Drama Academy. Future tours of Manifest Destiny are in the works for Prishtina (Kosovo), Chicago (IL), New York (NY), Beijing (China), Hamburg (Germany), and Boston (MA) as well as additional Detroit performances in 2012.
Manifest Destiny is an original performance by The Hinterlands, conceived and directed by Richard Newman and designed by Liza Bielby and Anthony Cerrato. Performers include Richard Newman, Liza Bielby, Eleni Zaharopolous, Steven DeWater, and Dave Sanders.

The Hinterlands production of Manifest Destiny! (there was blood on the saddle) will take place at The Jam Handy Building, 2900 East Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48202. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling 313.454.1756 or emailing info@thehinterlandsensemble.org. Tickets will also be available at the door, cash or check only.
