Bay City Players Announces Auditions for PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
This charming musical recently left Broadway and is hot stuff all over the country. Take six precocious kids (played by young adults), put them into the finals of a big-deal spelling bee run by three slightly off-center adults, invite four audience members to join in the spelling, add songs and laughs one after the other, and you have a musical comedy spelled A-W-E-S-O-M-E. Winner of Two Tony Awards, 2005
Spellers:
Chip Tolentino - current spelling champ; things come easy to him; lately going through some weird changes, i.e., puberty.
Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere - last name is the combination of her two fathers; younger than other spellers; very politically aware; wants justice.
Leaf Coneybear - a second alternative, he's here by accident; home schooled; excited and amused to be out in the world; a child of 70s flower children.
William Barfee - loaded with health problems; a bully so people don't pick on him; should have won last year; spells words on the floor with his foot.
Marcy Park - from a parochial school; moved often; knows she can beat the local talent; can play piano, dance, twirl or any special talents the actor has.
Olive Ostrovsky - word lover; quiet life; mom's in India on a retreat; dad hasn't shown up yet; no one has paid entry fee; starts shy and blossoms.
Adults:
Rona Lisa Perretti - won 3rd PC bee; totally in charge; conveys crucial info to audience; a local realtor.
Vice Principal Douglas Panch - substitute word pronouncer; stuck in his current job; wants to make up past mistakes to impress Rona.
Mitch Mahoney - the bee's "comfort counselor;" this is part of his community service time; really wants to help the kids into real life.
