Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Presents SIDE BY SIDE CONCERT

By:

Students at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor have been working with Conductor Arie Lipsky and members of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra to prepare for a shared concert experience on Tuesday, January 31st at 7:30 pm.

Arie Lipsky has spent several school days over the last months rehearsing the Overture to Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio, Holst's St. Paul's Suite, and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Suite with the 150 students who make up the three orchestras at Skyline High School. Last week, ten Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra members participated in sectional rehearsals, giving the high school students coaching specific to their instruments.

Tomorrow night, the A2SO and Skyline High School Orchestras will join forces as they share the stage to perform an unforgettable concert. Come hear the result of all their hard work at 7:30 pmon Tuesday, January 31 at Skyline High School. The concert is free. Thank you to Skyline Friends of the Arts for their support of this program.

Preparations for Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerts are underway

In March, more than 6,000 area students will participate in A2SO's Youth Concerts.

Elementary school students will experience Link Up: The Orchestra Sings on March 15. Those students have been practicing in their music classrooms for months in order to sing and play recorder along with the A2SO. They're learning all about melody as they prepare to perform Beethoven's Ode to Joy, Dvorak's New World Symphony, and Simple Gifts.

Middle school students will come to Hill Auditorium for a concert on March 21. In preparation for this experience, they have been learning about how music can paint a picture, tell a story, or evoke a feeling. The Middle school concert includes local composer Michael Schachter's Freylekhe Tanzen, Debussy's Nuages, and Stravinsky's Firebird. Local violinist, Chihiro Kakishima, will perform Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto on both concerts.

Arie Lipsky will be visiting a dozen schools in Pinckney, Ann Arbor and Brighton in the coming weeks to get students excited about the concerts.
