AMERICAN IDIOT Will Close Flint Rep Season
Kevin O'Callaghan directs the Tony-winning rock musical at University of Michigan-Flint Theatre.
FIM Flint Repertory Theatre will bring its season to a close with Green Day's American Idiot, the Tony Award-winning rock musical based on the Green Day album of the same name. Performances run May 29 – June 14, 2026 at the University of Michigan-Flint Theatre.
American Idiot is a pulse-pounding theatrical experience that fuses punk rock energy with raw, emotional storytelling, featuring music by Green Day, lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong and a book by Armstrong and Michael Mayer. Flint Rep's production is directed by Kevin O'Callaghan, with choreography by Cy Paolantonio and Megan Krause Meyer, and music direction by Leah Fox.
Comprised of music from Green Day's iconic protest album, American Idiot is a fitting way to wrap up a season that was anything but conventional for Flint Rep, which has spent the past year redefining what theatre can look like in Flint. Now, that spirit of innovation takes center stage in a rock opera that confronts both the challenge and the relief of breaking free from convention, all set to the music that defined a generation.
“American Idiot captures the urgency, frustration, hope and disillusionment of a generation searching for meaning in a chaotic world. More than 20 years after the album's release, its questions about identity, community, media and political division still feel startlingly immediate,” says Flint Rep Producing Artistic Director Nicole Samsel. “Bringing this explosive rock opera to Flint feels both thrilling and necessary.”
The production follows Johnny and his friends, restless young adults determined to escape the constraints of suburban life, as they search for purpose in a world of uncertainty, temptation and disillusionment. The score includes the band's greatest hits such as “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and brings urgency and edge to a story that continues to resonate.
“Beneath the adrenaline and punk-rock spectacle is a profoundly human story about loneliness, anger, friendship and the longing to matter,” adds Samsel. “It's a piece that demands total commitment from its artists and invites audiences to experience theatre as something visceral, immediate and alive.”
The production features a dynamic cast including Austin McCoy, Dorian O'Dell, Bello Paolo Pizzimenti, Alec Diem, Faith Green, Tiyanna Gentry, Lee Martin, Travis Darghali, Chanelle Beach, Rebecca Dral, Cali Hill, Deagan Krohn, Vinny Supp and Antonio Vettraino.
The creative team includes scenic design by Eli Sherlock, costume design by Celeste Jennings, lighting and media design by Chelsie McPhilimy, sound design by Taylor J. Williams and props design by Leslie Hull. The production stage manager is Sarah Ackerman.
Friday, June 5 is college night with free admission and pizza from Enzo's with a college ID. An American Sign Language-interpreted performance is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7.
