The Patricia And Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU Appoints Amy Galpin As New Curator

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU, the Smithsonian Affiliate in Miami, announces the appointment of Amy Galpin, PhD, as the museum's new Curator. She will begin her new role at the Frost on February 12, and most recently served as Curator at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College. Galpin's curatorial trajectory has primarily focused on modern and contemporary work created in the U.S. and Latin America. She also served as Associate Curator of Art of the Americas at the San Diego Museum of Art, and has curated exhibitions at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. In her new role at the Frost Art Museum FIU, Galpin will be responsible for curating the institution's exhibitions, implementing the museum's plans for its permanent collection, and leveraging her expertise to support the museum's vision. The museum is part of Florida International University, and is one of Miami's leading cultural destinations.

"Amy's curatorial experience spans across many of the nation's cultural regions, with a keen eye toward future-looking artistic movements that will expand our museum's impact and reach. As we kick off our 10th-anniversary milestone year, Amy's creative energy will be a great asset to the Frost's presentation of bold new exhibitions and programming," adds Dr. Pomeroy.

"I've admired the programming at the Frost throughout the years, and look forward to participating in the institution's future. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to engage in Miami's cultural scene, and with the students and faculty at FIU," adds Galpin.

Galpin received an MA in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University, and a PhD. in Art History from the University of Illinois-Chicago.

At the Cornell Fine Arts Museum her exhibitions included: Women and Abstraction (2015), Jess T. Dugan: Every breath we drew (2015), Displacement: Symbols and Journeys (2016), Patrick Martinez: American Memorial (2017), and Ria Brodell: Devotion (2018).

Galpin's exhibitions at the San Diego Museum of Art included: Behold, America! Art of the United States from Three San Diego Museums (a collaboration between the San Diego Museum of Art, the Timken Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego), Women, War, and Industry, Jean Charlot: Global Journey/Local Response and contemporary solo exhibitions with Hugo Crosthwaite, scott b. davis, Marianela de la Hoz, Noah Doely, and Rubén Ortiz-Torres.

Galpin also curated Steady Observation at the Orlando Science Center (2017), featuring works from the permanent collection of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum; Time and Thought: Art of the United States at the Mennello Museum of American Art (2017); Translating Revolution: U.S. Artists Interpret Mexican Muralism (National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, 2010); and Alfredo Ramos Martínez: Picturing Mexico from California (Pasadena Museum of California Art, 2014).

In Chicago, Galpin served as Gallery Coordinator for Woman Made Gallery. She has also worked as an Education and Collections Assistant at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum and as a Museum Fellow at the Terra Museum of American Art. Galpin has taught art history courses at Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University, Rollins College, and the University of Illinois-Chicago. In 2017 she received the President's Award for Diversity and Inclusion at Rollins College. Galpin's essay about the American abstract painter Doris Leeper was included in a book on the artist published by Florida Historical Press in 2017. She has forthcoming projects on Margaret Bourke-White and Miami-based contemporary artist Jamilah Sabur with the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.
