SOPHISTICATED LADIES: THE ART OF THEATRICAL COUTURE

DAYTONA BEACH, FL, APRIL 11, 2006 - Get an up-close peak at the costumes worn by some of Seaside Music Theater's most memorable leading ladies as The Daytona Beach Museum of Arts & Sciences presents Sophisticated Ladies: The Art of Theatrical Couture, an exhibit opening April 21.

An elaborate display of glamour, the exhibit will wow visitors with exquisite fabrics cascading to the floor in richly layered colors, patterns, and textures.  All 12 of the costumes on display have appeared in person in some of SMT's most unforgettable productions, including Aida, Hello, Dolly!, Beauty and the Beast, Follies, Sweet Charity, Jekyll and Hyde, Song of Singapore, Cyrano de Bergerac, Moby Dick! The Musical, La Perichole, and Cole Porter's You Never Know.

Through the costumes themselves, production photos from shows in which they appeared, and the sketches from which they were conceived, visitors will experience the full drama of costuming from page to stage in this unique exhibit that explores the relationship between costume design, fashion and art.

SMT's Costume Division, under the supervision of Costume Division Manager and Resident Designer Brian O'Keefe, houses an impressive collection of more than 25,000 costumes, representing more than 250 theatrical works. Each year, the costume division creates approximately 500 new costumes for SMT's productions. An average of 12,600 labor hours goes into making and altering the costumes for each production season. Costumes from SMT's collection are leased to theaters nationwide and have a reputation for being some of the finest created for musical theater anywhere.

Sophisticated Ladies: The Art of Theatrical Couture will run from April 21 through June 18 in the Root Lobby of the Museum of Arts & Sciences, Daytona Beach, located at 352 South Nova Road.

Seaside Music Theater and the Museum of Arts & Sciences gratefully acknowledge exhibit sponsors Amon Design, LLC,  Angell's Treasures, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hyatt Brown, Lillian F. Harry, and Jay and Anne Maze.  Special thanks also to Bennett's Framing Gallery.
