COMPANHIA DE DANÇA DEBORAH COLKER
KICKS OFF THE CARNIVAL CENTER PRESENTS
2007-2008 SEASON

"Snazzy, jazzy, sexy, slick and lovely"

October 5 & 6

Performances of Rota mark the company's only U.S. appearance this season

On the heels of last season's successful visit by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for Merce in Miami, Carnival Center launches its 2007-2008 season and continues the newfound tradition of bringing world-renowned contemporary dance to Miami with a two-day engagement of Brazil's Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker sponsored by TAM Brazilian Airlines.

On Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6 at 8 p.m., in its only U.S. appearance this season, the phenomenal Deborah Colker Dance Company performs Rota, a 90-minute work fusing ballet and modern dance, choreographed in part on a 22-foot rotating wheel which will dominate the stage of the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House.

Choreographed by the company's founder and director Deborah Colker, Rota is an exploration of gravity and space, amusement parks thrills, and the force that makes the world go round. Dominating the stage is an enormous rotating contraption, resembling the giant Ferris wheel of childhood dreams, around which dancers perform thrilling twists, turns and feats of physical strength which give "gravity and levity palpable form on the stage." (New York Post)

Deborah Colker is one of the finest dance creators of the Americas with dancers from all over Central and Latin America. She has been awarded with the Prêmio Ministério da Cultura, Brazil's most distinguished cultural prize, an Artistic Merit Medal from the Brazilian Dance Council, and London's prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. Since the founding of The Deborah Colker Dance Company in Rio de Janeiro 1994, the company's bold repertory includes six full-length dance pieces - Vulcão, Velox, Mix, Rota, Casa and 4 Por 4 – which have toured all over the world.

Deborah Colker Dance Company is exclusively sponsored in Brazil by Petrobras and Ministério da Cultura. This performance is sponsored by TAM Brazilian Airlines and generously underwritten by Sonesta Hotel & Suites Coconut Grove and Dr. and Mrs. David Shpilberg.

Carnival Center Education and Outreach Program will soon announce series of master classes and workshops that may accompany this performance. Visit www.carnivalcenter.org/education for more details.
