Art of Murder Playwright, DiPietro, to Visit Florida Rep

Florida Repertory Theatre  announced that playwright, Joe DiPietro, will visit Fort Myers to see his play, Art of Murder, and give a talk back following the performance on the evening of Wed., April 8th.

Florida Rep is producing two new plays by DiPietro this spring, Art of Murder through April 12, and The Last Romance, running April 24 to May 17.

Known most notably for his Off Broadway musical sensation, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, and the comedy about family relations, Over the River and Through the Woods, DiPietro is one of America's most prolific playwrights with new productions of his work popping up all over the country. At the time of his visit, DiPietro will have three plays in production in Fort Myers. Art of Murder is in performance and The Last Romance is in rehearsal at Florida Rep, while his 2005 Broadway musical All Shook Up running at Broadway Palm.

"I love to write for theatre, so for me it's not a chore to write a lot," DiPietro said. "It's fantastic to see my work done. The reason I write plays, as opposed to screenplays, is so many different theatre artists can interpret my work."

One of the most interesting characteristics of his work is that it is all over the map, and audiences in Southwest Florida are getting a taste of that in the weeks to come. Both Art of Murder and The Last Romance carry a heavy dose of DiPietro's signature style - wise comedy and real-life poignancy - but the two plays couldn't be more different from one another. One is a murder mystery thriller, and the other, a sweetly heart-felt romantic comedy.

Winner of the Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play, Art of Murder plunges audiences into the art world, exposing some of its most dangerous and grasping personalities. It tells the story of a world-renowned & eccentric artist, Jack Brooks, and his devious plot to murder his flamboyant art dealer, Vincent.

Like any good suspense thriller, there are plenty of twists, turns, gunshots and a few big surprises. As Jack is busy stabbing backs, he forgets to tie up a few loose ends - namely his wife, Annie, and their maid, who are in the house on the night of the planned execution.

Tickets are still available for the evening performance on Wednesday, April 8th. The talk back and audience forum with playwright, Joe DiPietro will follow - and is available to audience members at no extra cost.

Art of Murder by Joe DiPietro plays at Florida Rep through April 12. Performances are Tues. - Sat. at 8pm, with 2pm matinees on Wed., Sun. and selected Saturdays.

Art of Murder is sponsored by Naomi Bloom & Ron Wallace; the Media Sponsor is Gulf and Main Magazine.

Florida Repertory Theatre is located on Bay Street between Jackson and Hendry in the Historic Arcade Theatre in the Fort Myers River District. Subscriptions and single tickets are available through the Box Office at 239-332-4488. Or visit Florida Rep online at www.floridarep.org.
