Palm Beach Dramaworks presents Avery Sommers

Palm Beach Dramaworks presents Avery Sommers ImageBroadway veteran and South Florida favorite Avery Sommers, whose voice has been described as a "powerhouse" by The New York Times, takes the stage in Palm Beach Dramaworks' new cabaret series at the Perlberg Studio Theatre from June 23 - June 25. Sommers will present a program of songs by Fats Waller, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, George and Ira Gershwin, Marvin Hamlisch, Whitney Houston, Donna Sumner, and others. She will be accompanied by Irwin Solomon at the piano.

The series launched earlier this month with Laura Hodes, whose four performances quickly sold out. Tickets for Sommers' show went equally fast; a Sunday night performance has been added to the schedule.

Avery Sommers is a Carbonell Award winner who recently received her seventh nomination, this time for her starring role in The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith at Arts Garage. Her outstanding performance earned her Silver Palm and New Times awards. On Broadway, Sommers has been seen in Ain't Misbehavin', Chicago, Show Boat, and Platinum. She appeared in the national tour of Chicago as Matron "Mama" Morton, and as Jewel in the national tour of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas starring Ann-Margret. Sommers was seen at PBD in 2014 in Dividing the Estate, and as Motormouth Maybelle in the Actors' Playhouse production of Hairspray. Her one-woman show, I Love Being Here With You, played to two sold-out houses at the Kravis Center last year. Her film credits include Lost Everything and Immigration Tango. Sommers is currently co-starring in the new YouTube series In Sanity, Florida, playing the Reverend Ruby Parks.

Irwin Solomon has been a fixture in the South Florida music community since moving here from New York in 1996. His jazz trio performs concerts throughout Palm Beach and Martin Counties; next up is a concert on July 18 at the Harriet Himmel Theater in CityPlace.

Performance times for Sommers' shows are Friday night and Saturday night at 8pm, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon at 2pm, and Sunday night at 7pm. Tickets are $30. The series is sponsored by Kretzer Piano.
