Orwell's 1984 Comes to Pompano Beach Cultural Center

The Outré Theatre Company is proud to announce the first production of its 2017/18 season will be George Orwell's seminal dystopia 1984, adapted by Andrew White. This is Outré's sixth full season, and its first in its new home at the recently opened Pompano Beach Cultural Center.

"It's no surprise that Orwell's work is as timely and provocative as ever," said Skye Whitcomb, Outré's Artistic Director and the director of the production. "Every day we see something else that reminds us that fascism and dictatorship can insidiously intertwine itself into our society, and that there will even be those who welcome it. 1984 shows us a society where people have willingly given up control over every aspect of their lives in order to be 'safe'; it's quite frightening, really."

In this adaptation of Orwell's dystopia, the surveillance state is everywhere. The Party subtly controls all aspects of its citizens' lives, from the "news" they consume to the "history" they are taught to the very way they think and believe. In the midst of this society of lies and half-truths, one man remembers his childhood, a childhood without the Party, without the fear and the lies and the omnipresent spying. It is these memories which lead this man, Winston Smith, to rebel against Big Brother and to search for something more than just a bare existence. Outré's production of 1984 uses multimedia, film, and projections to create a world that isn't that far removed from our own.

The cast includes:

Seth Trucks (Winston): Seth Trucks trained at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts as well as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. For five years he worked as a performer and writer in New York with the comedy troupe Six Characters. Since moving to Florida he has been directing, teaching, and acting, most notably in Waiting for Godot, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and A Comedy of Errors. Seth is also a prolific guitarist and drummer.

Peter W. Galman (O'Brien): Peter Galman earned a Silver Palm award for his work as Baptista in Kiss Me, Kate at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in tandem with his role as a mad programmer in The Nether at Area Stage Company in Coral Gables. Peter was named Best Actor 2016 by the Miami New Times for The Nether. He was recently nominated for a Carbonell award for the role of Walt Disney in Lucas Hnath's play, A Public Reading of an Unfinished Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney, which played at Thinking Cap Theatre in Fort Lauderdale.

Jennipher Murphy (Julia): Jennipher Murphy received her MFA in performance from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and is an Actor's Equity Association Membership Candidate. A company member of Lost Girls Theatre in Miami, she originated the role of Lavinia in Andie Arthur's Juliet Among the Changelings. She has also been seen on South Florida Stages in The Merchant of Venice, Rabbit Hole, and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.

Meredith Bartmon (Syme): Meredith Bartmon has been working professionally since 2009 and is a member of UK Equity and an Actors' Equity Association Membership Candidate. Recently Meredith has performed in City Theatre's Summer Shorts, in Sister Act and Hello, Dolly at The Wick Theatre, and in Lazy Fair at Mad Cat Theatre in Miami. She received her MA in Acting at East 15 Acting School in London, and her BFA in Music Theatre from New World School of the Arts in Miami.

Murphy Hayes (Charrington): Murphy Hayes is a South Florida actor and graphic designer, whose last excursion with Outré was Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing. Other recent roles include The Chairman in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Colonel Craddock in Murdered To Death, Lazar Wolf in Fiddler On The Roof, Grampy in See Rock City, and Kris Kringle in Miracle On 34th Street.

Joey De La Rua (Parsons): Joey De La Rua is making his professional South Florida theatre debut in 1984. While earning his BFA in theatre-performance at Florida Atlantic University, he has played Katurian in The PIllowman, Barry Champlain in Talk Radio, Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit, and many others.

Michael Conner (Ampleforth): Michael Conner is a South Florida based writer and actor. His most recent credits include Mark Roberts' New Country at the Lake Worth Playhouse Black Box Series, and Strangers on a Train with the Arts Radio Network Theatre Project.

Daryl Patrice (Tillotson): Daryl Patrice is a graduate of Spelman College, and works as an actor for both film and stage. She appeared in the Oscar-winning film Moonlight, and will be featured later this year in the film Eyes of a Sinner. She has also been seen recently on South Florida Stages as Benita in Love and Human Remains at Infinite Abyss Theatre, and as a Phantom in The Rocky Horror Show with Evening Star Productions.
