New Theatre Announces An Expanded 2006-2007 Season

After a brief hiatus from production, New Theatre is delighted to announce an expanded 2006-2007 Season with three World Premieres and three Florida Premieres, along with its acclaimed South Florida Shakespeare Festival.

New Theatre kicks off the 2006-2007 Season in the summer with The South Florida Shakespeare Festival, running August 3 – 27, 2006. The Winter's Tale is in repertory with Much Ado About Nothing. With the support of the Funding Arts Network, these two Shakespeare masterpieces about jealousy, reconciliation, renewal, love and forgiveness take to the stage: an enigmatic, timeless adaptation of The Winter's Tale directed by Kathi E. B. Ellis, and a rich, modern day Miami adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing directed by Roberto Prestigiacomo.

New Theatre launches the Winter Season with the Florida premieres of John Strand's Lincolnesque (September 7 – October 1, 2006) and Quiara Alegría Hudes' 'Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue' ( October 12 – November 5, 2006.)  Lincolnesque takes a comic look into the lives of two brothers: one a Capital Hill speechwriter, the other a psychiatric outpatient who believes he is President Abraham Lincoln. Set in a city so desperately sane, that madness may be the remedy. In Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue, a young soldier comes to terms with his memories of the Iraq War while discovering the delicate link that unites him to his father and grandfather -- three generations of men across time.

New Theatre then brings to South Florida the World Premieres of Catherine Bush's Just A Kiss (November 16 – December 10, 2006) and newly appointed Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez's Sin Full Heaven ( January 18 – February 11, 2007.) Just A Kiss is a witty comedy about two actresses who co-star in a play with one big catch: they must play a love scene featuring a big kiss. Sin Full Heaven, chosen by immediate past Artistic Director, Rafael de Acha (prior to his retirement earlier this year,) is a gothic drama surrounding an overbearing tyrant and his adult daughter, whom he confines to his vast sugarcane plantation.

Next, New Theatre presents the Florida Premiere of Sonja Linden's I Have Before Me A Remarkable Document Given To Me By A Young Lady From Rwanda ( February 22 – March 18, 2007,) about a young survivor of an African civil war who seeks the help of a struggling writer to write a book about her experiences.

New Theatre closes the 2006-2007 Season with the World Premiere of Michael McKeever's The Miamians (a working title, April 5 – 29, 2007.) With the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, New Theatre has commissioned the South Florida Carbonell Award winning, Davie playwright Michael McKeever to write a play about three generations of Miamians.
