LYSISTRATA Has Local Connections

By:

LYSISTRATA Has Local Connections ImageA Classic Theatre's version of Lysistrata was translated from the Greek by Valentina Santas. the aunt of St. Augustine resident Constantine Santas, Professor Emeritus of Flagler College, who edited her translation for this production.

Valentina was born in England in 1915 and imigrated to Greece during the Great Depression. She began her career by teaching English as a second language and became a much sought after teacher. She taught at many schools in Athens including the University of Athens in the School of Languages.

In her later years she devoted herself to translating works from Greek to English. In the summer of 2007 she completed a much-cherished project, Lysisrata by Aristophanes, which is now being presented by A Classic Theatre.

Constantine Santas provided this personal note: "Valentina died in Palaion Phaliron, near Athens, in 2015 at the age of 100. She was in touch with me until her death, and in her calls and letters she revealed that she never lost her lucidity and the love she had for us in her great heart. This reading of her work, Lysistrata by A Classic Theatre in St. Augustine, Florida, is dedicated to her memory."
