Karoline Leach's TRYST Opens 5/16 at Palm Beach Dramaworks

The time is 1910 but the gamesmanship is timeless in Karoline Leach's Tryst, a suspenseful, romantic, psychological thriller that concludes Palm Beach Dramaworks' 2013-2014 season. Tryst opens on Friday, May 16 (8pm) and continues through June 8 at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre (201 Clematis Street), with specially priced previews on May 14 and 15.

The two-character play is inspired in part by the true story of George Joseph Smith, a notorious criminal and serial bigamist in Edwardian London, who married lonely women, absconded with their life savings, and murdered three of his victims. In Tryst, the con man's name is George Love - one of Smith's aliases was Oliver George Love - who takes pride in leaving his unsuspecting prey smiling: He systematically weds and beds them before disappearing with their money. Then he meets and marries Adelaide Pinchin, and the twists and turns begin.

Tryst stars Jim Ballard and Claire Brownell, who were last seen at Palm Beach Dramaworks in the 2013 production of Exit the King. The production is directed by Resident Director J. Barry Lewis, and features scenic design by Jeff Modereger, costume design by Brian O'Keefe, lighting design by John Hall, and sound design by Rich Szczublewski.

Tryst was originally produced in London in 1997, when it was called The Mysterious Mr. Love. A revised version of the play, with its current title, premiered off-Broadway at the Promenade Theatre in 2006, and has since had numerous stagings in North America and Europe.

Karoline Leach was born in Liverpool, and worked as an actor and director before turning to writing. She is best known as the author of the controversial biography, In the Shadow of the Dreamchild, which re-examines the life of author Lewis Carroll.

Palm Beach Dramaworks is a non-profit, professional theatre and is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the South Florida Theatre League, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Florida Professional Theatres Association, Florida Theatre Conference, and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. For fourteen years, West Palm Beach's only professional, multi-award-winning resident theatre has brought to the Palm Beaches a distinguished roster of plays under the guidance of Producing Artistic Director William Hayes.

The performance schedule is as follows: Evening performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8PM and select Sundays at 7PM. Matinee performances are on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2PM. Individual tickets are $60 for all performances. Preview performances are $52 and Opening Night tickets are $75. Student tickets are available for $10. Group rates for 20 or more and discounted season subscriptions are also available.
