The Arts at St. Johns presents Conundrum Stages, Inc., in a free play reading of Summer Brave, by William Inge, on Monday, July 21st at 7:30 pm.  Summer Brave has been dubbed as the "rewritten and final version of the romantic comedy Picnic" and follows the same basic story of its Pulitzer Prize winning counterpart - with a few distinctions, thus making it a separate work that can hold its own.   The setting is a small Kansas town where everyone knows each other -- until a mysterious young stranger affects the ambiance of the community. The young man sets off a chain of events that has the citizens pondering about the present and an unpleasant future.

Summer Brave has more characters than Picnic since Inge re-focuses on his original purpose, giving Brave more humor and realism. In his preface, Inge wrote that he never completely fulfilled his goals before going into production with Picnic in 1953. After the accolades were bestowed upon Picnic including the hit movie, Inge decided to go back and rework the play for his own gratification.  Over 50 years later, this work, from one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century, resonates even today as we ponder the wonders of youth and realize that life is moving faster than we would like.

Aligned with the Arts at St. Johns' mission of supporting local artists, Conundrum Stages, Inc. is a local organization producing small-scale presentations of various fields in the performing arts. Established in 2004, under the original name of the Ghost Light Series, this local arts group has presented play readings of classic and contemporary works. As Conundrum Stages, the group plans to support the local arts community through various showcases in order to promote local performance artists.
