FST Announces 2007-2008 Mainstage Season

FST's 2007-2008 Winter Mainstage Season is composed of four plays that are sure to challenge audiences with as much gusto as they entertain.  This season begins with an Off-Broadway musical comedy sensation in Altar Boyz followed by the engaging and funny plays Pure Confidence and Jewtopia and ends with a new work called The Miamians.  Subscriptions to all 4 shows can be purchased for $39-$59 by calling FST's box office at 941-366-9000. 

The first production in the 2007-2008 season is Altar Boyz, beginning October 10 in the Keating Theatre and playing through December 1.  Altar Boyz is a musical-comedy spoof about a fictitious boy-band on the last night of their national "Raise the Praise" tour.  This holy-inspiring comedy sweetly satirizes a myriad of contemporary American cultural institutions.   

Altar Boyz tells the story of five small town boys (Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham) trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time.  With angelic voices, amazing dance moves and a touching story, the boyz very innocently spoof the phenomenon of boy bands and the popularity of Christian-themed music without offending. 

Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for best off-Broadway musical and nominated for 7 Drama Desk awards, Altar Boyz is a New York sensation.  Writer, actor, director, Kevin Del Aguila wrote the book.  Sarasota audiences may remember Kevin from his role in FST's 2002 production of No Way to Treat a Lady.  The Music and Lyrics were written by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker.  FST's production of Altar Boyz will be directed by artistic director Richard Hopkins. 

Pure Confidence will be the second show in the Mainstage season.  Written by Carlyle Brown, who authored and starred in last year's Stage III production of The Fula from America, Pure Confidence opens December 5, 2007 in the Keating Theatre and will play through January 26, 2008.

Pure Confidence is an exploration of the true meaning of freedom set in the gritty, high-stakes world of Civil War-era horse racing.  Both Simon Cato, a smart, cocky 'colored' jockey, and his horse, Pure Confidence, are owned by Colonel Wiley Johnson.  Cato wants to buy his freedom, but the Civil War changes everything.  Pure Confidence is an emotional and comedic look at the complexity of race, humanity, love and dignity. 

The third production in FST's Mainstage season is a Goy meets Girl love story called Jewtopia (by Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson).  Opening January 30, 2008 and playing through March March 22, 2008 in the Keating Theatre, Jewtopia is a comedy for people of all denominations. 

Chris, a gentile, wants to marry a Jewish girl so he'll never have to make another decision.  Adam, a Jew, wants to marry a Jewish girl to please his family, but he can't get a date to save his life.  Chris promises he will help Adam find the Jewish girl of his dreams if Adam will help Chris shed his gentile-ness.  Jewtopia was an off-Broadway hit and the longest running comedy in Los Angeles history.  Variety calls Jewtopia an "equal opportunity satire!" 

The 2007-2008 Mainstage Season ends with a smart and engaging new play by Florida playwright, Michael McKeever (37 Postcards, etc) called The Miamians.  Opening April 2, 2008 and playing through May 24, 2008, this play deals with the joining of cultures in America.  

As a new skyline forms over the city of Miami, heritage and traditions are slowly being lost.  Three families – one Cuban, one African American and one Jewish – collide, intermingle and eventually blend as McKeever's provocative new play weaves a tapestry of the new American Dream, and perhaps a new American hope.  The Miamians is being produced as part of FST's festival of new plays. 

All 4 shows – Altar Boyz, Pure Confidence, Jewtopia and The Miamians – will be presented at FST's Keating Theatre.  Single tickets range from $19 for previews to $29-$34 for regular performances.  A subscription to all 4 shows ranges from $39-$59.  Both subscription tickets and single tickets may be purchased from the FST Box Office in person or by calling (941) 366-9000.  Single tickets (only) may be purchased on FST's website at www.floridastudiotheatre.org.  FST's website is also an excellent source for videos, articles and information about FST's productions.
