JO MARIE PAYTON COMING HOME TO HOST THE FIRST
URBAN THEATRE AND ENTERTAINMENT FESTIVAL/AWARDS
IN MIAMI GARDENS
The stage is set in Miami Gardens, Florida for the first Urban Theatre and Entertainment Festival/Awards at the Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts and throughout the neighborhoods and communities in South Florida, August 1-5, 2006.
Once the e mail blast was transmitted to California, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore and South Florida for the first ever Urban Theatre and Entertainment Festival/Awards, Ms. JoMarie Payton made the call to offer her support and encouraging words..."This is home, I applaud you for what you are about to do, to truly enrich the lives and community in a legendary artistic and creative manner. It is so needed and so worthwhile. The benefits of involvement and keeping the arts alive and functioning within a neighborhood and community are immeasurable. The Arts is an ideal power source for maintaining ones' culture and identity. Events and efforts such as this are also an honorable way to say thank you to those who have paved the way and kept theatre alive for us to enjoy on a close, intimate and personal level without having leave town" says Payton.
The vision for the event was conceived when Julia Brown, Founder/CEO of the JEBA Companies and Ed Haynes, Founder/CEO of Community Capacity Builders, Inc. & President of the JEBA Companies and entrepreneur partners attended the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, NC where more than 55,000 thespians, scholars, personalities from stage, screen, and television, along with teachers, authors, professors, CEO's from Corporate America, writers, producers, poets, presenters, graphic artists, and voice over experts convene every other year. JEBA conducted a sampling of those in attendance to determine the number of participants from Miami, Florida. The survey concluded that 2% were from Miami, Florida and out of the estimated 5,000 children who attended, none were from Miami-Dade County. These results motivated JEBA and its partners to establish the Urban Theatre and Entertainment Festival/Awards for the purpose of creating an avenue for the community and children in particular to come face to face with the Arts for creative expression.
The first honoree is Mr. Larry Leon Hamlin, founder, producer and artistic director of the National Black Theatre Festival held every other year in Winston Salem, NC. Numerous stars from stage, screen and TV, including JoMarie Payton, Dawnn Lewis, Kosmond Russell, Carl Clay, Marvin Webster (Marvelous Entertainment,) Gerald McBride (Voice Over Productions,) David Paladino, Thea-Marie Perkins, Rhonda Passion Hansome, and Shekinah Glory Ministry will be in attendance and the calls are still coming in.
Tickets prices range from $25.00 for most shows (excluding the Awards Ceremony which are $50.00 in advance and $75.00 day of show - at the Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts).
