DOWNSTAGE MIAMI 2006

Downstage Miami is a program funded by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs that is designed to provide intensive support for cultivating new work from Miami-Dade's growing community of playwrights. Here's how Downstage works:

Three local playwrights, whose works are selected through a competitive process by a national panel of theater experts, are invited to spend three weekends in intensive two-day workshops conducted by a master playwright. At the conclusion of the workshops, the new plays are presented in professionally produced readings at theaters devoted to presenting new works.

The participation of our nation's leading playwrights has been crucial to the viability of this project. Among them have been John Guare, Edward Albee, Maria Irene Fornes, Nilo Cruz, Jeffrey Sweet, A.R. Gurney, Eduardo Machado, Arthur Kopit and Tina Howe.

Four plays developed during this program have enjoyed readings in New York. One had a full production off-Broadway last fall. One of the participants is now at the Yale School of Drama and another won the 2005 New Play Competition presented by Southern Rep in New Orleans (Hurricane Katrina helped move the production of The Sunken Living Room to New Theatre last spring.) The Boy From Russia, to be presented next spring at Actors' Playhouse, was also created through this program. New Theatre's Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez, developed Sin Full Heaven through Downstage. His play was recently accepted for the National New Play Network Showcase.

Join them on November 29th as this year's participants, Danielle Comerford, Juan Sanchez, and Susi Westfall, provide you with readings that illustrate the process of writing with the help of the 2006 master playwright, Leslie Ayvazian.
