With this production, Square Peg begins a partnership with Deluxe Arts that will bring together the worlds of visual art and theatre.This first production is the comedy, Three Angels Dancing on a Needle by Assurbanipal Babilla. Three Angels Dancing on a Needle is a comedy about pure love, pure lust, and all the impure thoughts in between. Three characters play out absurd fantasies of sex and revenge as they look for happiness in all the wrong places. Three Angels, has been performed across the U.S, and in Europe. Square Peg's Production is its Southeastern premiere.
Babilla was a well-known playwright/director /painter/ sculptor. After his exhibit of erotic nude self-portraits was put on trial, banned, and subsequently burned during Khomeni's regime, he fled his country in 1979. His work often examines the clash of the spiritual and the sexual parts of human nature using outrageous humor and shocking
imagery. Last year he was awarded a Hellman/Hammett grant in recognition of his courage in the face of political persecution.
The evening will begin with a short curtain-raiser, Nerves, an
original movement/theatre piece, inspired by playwright, Charles Mee, that compresses a lifetime of bad dates into fifteen minutes. This piece was developed and created by the Square Peg company.Both pieces will be performed by Miriam Kulick, Merry Jo Pitasi, and Odell Rivas under the direction of Michael Yawney.Deluxe Arts is a collaboration of exhibition space for Miami and international artists, a rehearsal/recording studio and courtyard for conversation and transcending the ordinary. Presenting performance artist, visual artists, musicians, dancers, and theatre, the studio will conspire to present things that can shock, amuse, seduce, and just entertain.
