Broadway Hit SOUTH PACIFIC Completes Maltz Jupiter Theatre's Record-Breaking Season

"Some Enchanted Evening" awaits at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre with a universal love story and the unforgettable, sumptuous score that is South Pacific.

Onstage March 6 through 25, the timeless Tony Award-winning Broadway hit takes audiences on a journey to an island in the South Pacific during World War II, where an American nurse finds herself in the midst of love and war.

Nellie Forbush has fallen deeply in love with Frenchman Emile De Becque, a widowed plantation owner who has lived on the island for many years. But their sweeping romance is tested by the complexities of politics and prejudices of their time. This beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic is sure to delight with memorable songs like "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," "Bali Ha'i" and "There is Nothing Like a Dame."

Composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, South Pacific's original 1949 Broadway production enjoyed immense success, winning 10 Tony Awards and becoming the second-longest running Broadway musical to that point. In addition to numerous successful revivals, tours, a 1958 film and TV adaptations, the musical's 2008 Broadway revival was also a critical success, winning seven Tony Awards.

"Exuberant and infectious," raved The New York Times, while Newsday dubbed the show "heartfelt and spectacular." USA Today wrote that South Pacific is "spine tingling! It soars!" while Variety hailed it as "ravishing theater" and the New York Daily News called it "extraordinary!"

Led by award-winning director Gordon Greenberg (Broadway and PBS Great Performances' Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn and London's acclaimed West End revival of Guys And Dolls) - who directed the Theatre's critically-acclaimed hit production of Barnum in 2009 - the Theatre's production will feature choreography by Connor Gallagher (seen onstage in the Theatre's production of The Boy Friend), a prominent choreographer who recently won the 2016 Astaire Award for Best Off-Broadway Choreography for The Robber Bridegroom.

"South Pacific is one of the greatest musicals ever written," Greenberg said. "It's a show that is both nostalgic and shockingly contemporary and human. It's a testament to the musical's staying power to see how it continues to resonate with audiences, 70 years later."

With a dynamic cast of 28 that includes Broadway's Erin Davie as Nellie (Sunday in the Park with George, Side Show, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, A Little Night Music, Grey Gardens and Curtains) and Nicholas Rodriguez as Emile (Captain Georg von Trapp in the recent national tour of The Sound of Music and Broadway's Tarzan, among others), other members of the show's creative team include scenic designer Paul Tate DePoo III (known for the Theatre's productions of Me and My Girl, The Producers, The Wiz, Les Misérables, The Will Rogers Follies, Annie, The Music Man and Hello, Dolly!), lighting designer Rob Denton (whose work across the country includes A Chorus Line, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Thoroughly Modern Millie), costume designer Tristan Raines (whose work includes The New York Pops Christmas Concert, Would You Still Love Me If?, Soul Doctor, Stalking the Bogeyman and Bare) music director Eric Alsford (known for the Theatre's productions of A Chorus Line, The Wiz, Les Misérables and Love Is Love) and sound design by Carbonell Award-winning resident sound designer Marty Mets.
