Orpheum Family Series to Begin Next Month with CELESTE

By:
The Orpheum Theatre Group's 2016-2017 Family Series begins with Celeste on Friday, October 28th at 6:30 PM at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education.

Celeste explores the world of a young girl with a big imagination and her struggle making social connections. The Halloran Centre will partner with Full Spectrum Initiative for a hands-on activity preceding this special sensory-friendly performance.

Sensory friendly performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to all families with children with autism or with other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities. For a full list of accommodations related to this performance, please visit www.orpheum-memphis.com.

Arrive early to create a calming bottle with Full Spectrum Theatre Initiative, a local initiative that strives to connect the autism community with the performing arts. Doors open at 5:30 PM.

"Through this important partnership with Full Spectrum Initiative we are leveraging our reach in the community with their knowledge and experience of such an important social issue," said Alice Roberts, VP of Programming & Education. "Theatre is shifting to become more inclusive, and we are excited to be a part of it."

Celeste follows a young girl who is having a hard time at school; she can't seem to make any friends in her class, so she decides she must be from outer space. Celeste knows there is a whole world of people who are like her up in the stars, so she starts building a spaceship to bring her back to her home planet. That's when Celeste meets Martin, a new boy at school, who wants to help build the rocket, and the adventure takes a new turn. As we see the world through her eyes, and the tremendous color and joy that her inner world presents, we realize that seeing things differently can be a wonderful gift. Celeste is recommended for ages 5 and up.

The mission of the Orpheum Theatre Group is to enhance the communities we serve by utilizing the performing arts to entertain, educate, and enlighten while preserving the historic Orpheum Theatre and the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education. For more information, visit www.orpheum-memphis.com.

The mission of this initiative is to raise awareness, both inside and outside of the autism community, that participation in and exposure to the performing arts can enrich and improve anyone's life. I believe that the ability for every individual to think critically and to function in society effectively is beneficial to all, and therefore, is the responsibility of all. The goal of this organization is to give opportunity to learn from, and participate in, the performing arts to some of those who may have been marginalized due to their social differences.
