FEMMEmphis Struts Onto the Memphis Theatre Scene

FEMMEmphis Struts Onto the Memphis Theatre SceneFEMMEmphis, the first all-female arts collective of its kind in Memphis, is presenting its first theatrical production opening on August 4th! Founded by native Memphians and long-time performers Rae and Jamie Boller, FEMMEmphis aims to champion all womyn by empowering and promoting the female, female-presenting, and gender-queer artistic voices in the Memphis community.

Opening on August 4, FEMMEmphis will present a limited run of a regional premiere--Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties. In this absurd comedy from award-winning playwright Jen Silverman, five women are brought together by the power of the Thea-tah. As they devise their own play, the unlikely friends discuss love, relationships, power, loneliness, and art. A hysterical and heart-warming story, Collective Rage confronts the stereotypes of female identity.

Director Claire Rutkauskas calls Collective Rage; A Play in Five Betties "a fresh, new, and challenging, script that takes significant risks." Rutkauskas adds that "it has been amazingly rewarding to work with such talented, fearless, 901 women who not only take those risks, but raise them. The play takes place in a world that belongs to the Betties but is not so far from our own. Through a desire for change and belonging, the Betties, with no experience, decide to 'devise' a play. All the while discovering their individual voices and what it is that they actually have to say to the world."

The four-performance run will feature a special late-night performance the night of August 5. Starting at 10pm, there will be drinks, jazz, a costume contest, and more! This performance will begin at 11pm.

Note: This production does contains strong sexual language and is not suitable for children.
