Portland Ovations brings the internationally acclaimed Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to Merrill Auditorium for an evening concert on January 25, 2013 at 8pm.

On tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its formation, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis features 15 of jazz's leading soloists under the leadership of Marsalis, a musical director, trumpeter, composer, and educator. He is truly someone that embodies all things jazz from its past, present and future. Hailed by The Los Angeles Times as, "extraordinarily versatile," Marsalis and the orchestra draw from an extensive repertoire that include not only the masterworks of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and other jazz legends but also original compositions by Marsalis, Ted Nash and several members of this incredible ensemble.

Formed in 1987, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis was comprised of the surviving members of the Duke Ellington Big Band and the Wynton Marsalis Septet. The critically acclaimed resident orchestra continues to perform a repertoire across the full jazz spectrum - from the music's New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz. By creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new music for quartets, big bands, chamber music ensembles, symphony orchestras, tap dance, and ballet, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places the group among the finest musicians today.
