Portland Ovations and Ovations Offstage offers a masterclass with American pianist Christopher O'Riley, featuring three accomplished Maine piano students at Merrill Auditorium on November 18th from 3:30pm to 5pm prior to his collaborative concert of Shuffle.Play.Listen. with Matt Haimovitz.

Christopher O'Riley host of the popular NPR music program, From the Top is recognized as one of the leading American pianists of his generation. He tours extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician and has appeared with every major orchestra. Mr. O'Riley has released a set of highly regarded recordings of the music of Radiohead, Nick Drake, and others. His Masterclass at Merrill Auditorium will feature Allen Yu, Derek Herzer and Eric Peppe.

Bowdoin student, Allen Yu began his study of piano at age six in Beijing, and won his first major competition at ten. In 2008, Allen charmed audiences nationwide as a performer featured on NPR's From the Top as a Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist and has since won numerous awards including first prize at the New York State Bertha F. Lang Empire State Piano Competition, the Ithaca College Piano Concerto Competition, the Manchester Young Artist Competition and the New York MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) Baldwin Piano Competition.

Derek Herzer from Portland is originally from Gaylord, Michigan and did his undergraduate work in piano at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He moved to Portland this fall to begin graduate work in piano performance with Laura Kargul at the University of Southern Maine and is a graduate assistant in accompanying at USM.

Eric Peppe from Westbrook is in his second year of the Master of Music program in piano performance at the University of Southern Maine School of Music. He has studied piano and composition with Bob Glover, Jeffrey Kahane, and Jerry Bowder, and currently studies with Laura Kargul and Dan Sonenberg. He has also worked with Frank Glazer, Igor Kipnis, James Barbagalo, and Jerome Rose, among others.

The masterclass will feature works by Beethoven, Liszt, Mendelssohn and Nikolai Medtner and is open to the public for an observation fee of $10. For more information, please contact Ovations Offstage at (207) 773-3150.
