Penobscot Theatre Company Offers Camp for Students This Month

By:

Registration is open for Penobscot Theatre Company's next School Vacation Camp for students aged 4-14: Monday, April 20, through Friday, April 24. Each day, highly energetic expert teaching artists will lead participants in various themed dramatic activities that culminate in a short demonstration for their families.

"Our April Vacation Camp is yet another way for young people to discover and fuel a love for theatre," said Amy Roeder, the company's director of education. "The full-day experience is also great for young thespians who have had some training and want to go deeper. We'll be learning about many elements of theatrical performance with a special introduction to design, which we're excited to deliver in partnership with the University of Maine Museum of Art!"

The University of Maine Museum of Art (UMMA) and Penobscot Theatre Company are teaming up for the first time to provide a cross-disciplinary look at the arts this April break. On Thursday, April 23, UMMA will host the morning portion of the theatre's April Vacation Camp. Education Coordinator Eva Wagner will help students explore the elements of art and principals of design as they relate to art in the galleries. With the museum's pieces as inspiration, participants will create art work in the studio, then apply some of their learning to afternoon activities at the Bangor Opera House, the theatre's historic home.

The daily schedule will begin at 9:00 am with structured activities until 4:00 pm. Because each day will be centered on a different theme, the camp will be flexible and children may attend any or all of the days. Themes may include (but will not be limited to): musical theatre, Shakespeare, storytelling, improvisation and theatrical design. Each day will end with a showcase of the work for students' families at 3:45 pm. All activities will be held at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main Street, Bangor, with the exception of Thursday, when students should be dropped off at the University of Maine Museum of Art, 40 Harlow Street, Bangor. Space at UMMA is limited so enrollment is strictly capped that day. Early registration is encouraged to secure a spot. The cost is $50 per day or $225 for the week. Early drop-off and late pick-up options are available for an additional fee.
