Mark Torres Stars in Penobscot Theatre Company's GOD OF CARNAGE, Now thru 3/30

By:

Penobscot Theatre Company will welcome former Artistic Director Mark Torres back to Bangor for a lead role in the upcoming production of GOD OF CARNAGE, which will run tongiht, March 13-30. "During this special 40th-anniversary season, it is a privilege to reengage an artist who has contributed so much to the company's rich history," said current Artistic Director Bari Newport. "Mark is bringing passion, creativity, and extraordinary talent to this production, as he did for so many years at the helm of this organization."

Torres led the company from 1992 to 2005, and it was during his tenure that the theatre reorganized to operate with paid professionals. Under his leadership, the audience grew steadily and he broadened the company's activity to include the annual Maine Shakespeare Festival, which performed on the banks of the Penobscot River for seven summers.

"This theatre occupies a special place in the community and has endured and matured for 40 years, which is an accomplishment not every community can claim. That reciprocal and elemental relationship between an arts organization and the community it serves must be strong for a regional theatre to thrive. Bangor should be commended for sustaining its flagship theatre organization over four decades and embrace the challenges and responsibility of continuing that fine tradition."

In GOD OF CARNAGE, Torres will join a brilliant cast of regional talent: A.J. Mooney, Bernard Hope, and Jeri Misler. Written by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton, this Tony Award-winning play captures the angst and absurdity of parenting and coupling in the modern age. The New York Times raved about the Broadway premiere: "Reza's streamlined anatomy of the human animal incites the kind of laughter that comes from the gut..."
