Mad Horse Theatre Co Announces Spring Actors Workshop

By: Feb. 04, 2011

The Mad Horse Theatre Company is pleased to announce that this spring it will once again sponsor an eight-week acting workshop taught by professional director and actor Al D'Andrea.

"Acting From The Ground Up: How An Actor Prepares To Play The Role" is a fresh approach to acting that takes a comprehensive, in-depth look at the building blocks of the actor's work in creating a role in a play. D'Andrea will employ the techniques of Stella Adler, Viola Spolin, and Stephen Book as a point of departure. Students will explore fundamentals such as partnership, action, objective, character, emotion, and conflict through a variety of games, exercises, and improvisations. The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as experienced actors who seek an active workout while revisiting the essential elements of their stagecraft. No acting experience is necessary.

Al D'Andrea has worked professionally as an actor and director in New York and Los Angeles for over 30 years. He is the former artistic director of New York's Third Step Theatre Company, where he developed dozens of new plays and musicals for the stage, and current Artistic Director of the new Snowlion Repertory Company based in Portland. He has directed countless productions and workshops across the country, and has taught for many years. His teaching is based on the work of two theater greats with whom he studied - the legendary Stella Adler and Hollywood sensation Stephen Book, protégé of the renowned Viola Spolin.

The workshop will take place at the Hutchins School, 24 Mosher Street, in South Portland, home of Mad Horse Theatre Company. "Acting From The Ground Up" will run Tuesdays from 6 pm - 9 pm, April 5nd through May 24th. The cost of the 8-week workshop is $200. Space is limited. For more information, visit www.al-dandrea.com and click "Classes". To reserve a place in the workshop, please contact Margit Ahlin at wordzworth@aol.com or 207-518-9305.
