Opening night for "Les Miserables" must have been a "high" for everyone associated with Hackmatack Playhouse, Route 236 in Berwick: A sell out show and a standing ovation! "Les Mis" will go down in history as one of this quaint, real barn, traditional summer theatre's best runs.
Including the orchestra and cast, the show includes over 50 local and national live theatre professionals from as far away as Hawaii, most of whom continually return to be part of the Hackmatack experience. The play also features actors from Marshwood High School in South Berwick. They all work together in precision; with fine acting, and powerful singing, including downstage productions that fill the barn and surrounding Guptill farm and homestead with music that has made "Les Mis" so successful. This international smash hit is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but sees nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert who refuses to believe that Valjean can change his ways. With the backdrop of the French Revolution, the story is grand and uplifting - and the music packs a thrilling emotional wallop. The show is a powerful affirmation of the human spirit.Pictured: Actors portray the student rebellion in "Les Miserables" playing through August 17 at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick.
