The Liminal Playhouse Opens Its Fourth Season With MR. UNIVERSE By Jim Grimsley
By: Stephi Wild
Artistic Director Tony Prince and Producing Director Richard McGrew are excited to open the fourth season of The Liminal Playhouse with Jim Grimsley's "Mr. Universe."
Directed by Prince, this outlandish, comic, suspenseful, shocking and strangely moving play from 1987 has been unjustly neglected and rarely produced, never in Louisville. It is late spring of 1979 in New Orleans. While a saxophone player (Brian Schaffner) plays in the street, a ranting Katy Jume (Angela D. Williams) finds a scantily clad muscle man (Anthony Franklin) covered in blood. Two drag queens, Vick (Michael Roberts) and Judy (Eric Sharp), invite them into their apartment. There they are visited by a police woman (Erin Jones) investigating the death of a man from out-of-town found naked in a motel and by their neighbor Juel Laurie (Heidi Yost) who warns them of the danger her dead husband is communicating to her. The scenic designer is Tony Prince. The lighting designer is Keith Kimmel. The costume designer is Shane Estes. The composer is Brian Schaffner. The sound designer is Richard McGrew.
