Roots + Wings to Bring THE BLOOD ALWAYS RETURNS to Kentucky Center

Roots + Wings will bring The Blood Always Returns to Kentucky Center's Bomhard Theater, Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5, 2016 at 8 p.m.

The Blood Always Returns focuses on two young people who struggle with the increasing issues they see in their community and with their own identity. These problems come to the forefront when examining what it means to be black in Kentucky. While exploring their history from Africa to Kentucky, their own family begins to give them a sense understanding of who they are and the roots of the problems in their community. A culmination of events leads them to the revelation that the keys to self-understanding and how we form community is knowledge that has always been carried within us.

Roots + Wings is a theatre project that combines performance, music, poetry and dance. The goal of the project is to ignite cultural production in West Louisville's underutilized spaces and use the arts to support the drive to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline and bring young people back into the community.

The group, founded in 2014, consists of 10 performers and was one of 38 recipients of ArtPlace America's 2015 National Grants Program.

Roots + Wings is using the grant to work with West Louisville's "Zones of Hope". The group enlists the support of experienced arts and community mentors to support a group of emerging artists as they explore the links between traditional West African and Appalachian cultures and conduct peer-to-peer writing, music and performance workshops in that area.
