Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition Set for 3/3

Performers will take the stage of the Singletary Center for the Arts March 3 during the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition in hopes of claiming prizes and scholarships totaling more than a half-million dollars.

During this world-class scholarship competition, budding vocalists from around the world will sing for scholarships to attend the University of Kentucky and additional cash prizes. Since the competition's beginning in 2005, more than 30 vocalists have received millions of dollars in scholarships to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocal performance under the tutelage of Dr. Everett McCorvey, director of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre. Past winners have excelled in their vocal career, with further achievements that include teaching vocal performance in Cologne, Germany, and studying at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

The Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition presents a rare opportunity for members of the public to watch the future stars of opera free of admission. The competition will be held Sunday, March 3, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and will also feature performances from previous undergraduate and graduate winners. The top local school with the most students in attendance will receive a $500 stipend for music education from Alltech.

"When I watch these gifted performers, teary eyed and overcome with joy, walk across the stage to receive the ticket to pursue their dreams in music, I know we're doing our part to secure the enjoyment and exploration of the arts for generations to come."

For demonstrating an exceptional commitment to the arts, Alltech was classed in The BCA 10: Best Companies Supporting the Arts in America by Americans for the Arts in 2012. Alltech arts initiatives include the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition, the Alltech Fortnight Festival and the Haitian Harmony Choir, part of its philanthropic Sustainable Haiti Project. The annual BCA 10 designation recognizes American companies that support the arts through grants, local partnerships, volunteer programs, matching gifts, sponsorships and board participation.
