Born Hansel in East Germany, Hedwig undergoes a botched sex reassignment surgery during her escape to the West with her American husband. This event, forever referred to as the "Angry Inch," becomes a source of emotional turmoil and a constant reminder of her quest for wholeness. Hedwig and her band, The Angry Inch, travel from town to town, captivating small crowds with their music.
