Saturday evening, January 8th at 8:00 pm, The Grove Theatre is starting off 2011 with a special performance written and directed by John Lynd. A critically acclaimed one man show, chronicling the life, great works, and mysterious death of literary legend Edgar Allan Poe, "Lord, Save My Poor Soul: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe," stars Travis Rhett Wilson as Poe.

The 90-minute show is told by Poe of his life as a writer. The tragedy of his life is told through the grave detail of the deaths of loved ones to his struggle with sanity to his fight with the bottle.

"Travis Rhett Wilson portrays Poe with Compassion and energy," said Director John Lynd. "He seamlessly performs Poe's classics such as ‘The Raven,' ‘The Tell Tale Heart,' and rare poetry. This is a great performance and is perfect timing for Halloween as an educational insight into one of the greatest artists of all time."

"I have always been fascinated with the phenomenon of tortured, self-destructive genius coupled with mental instability," Wilson said. "Poe is a prime example of that. Though I am sure, Mr. Poe would not have regarded himself, as a madman. For a headcase, Mr. Poe seemed to have no trouble creating some of the greatest and most influential works of poetry, and fiction that the literary world has ever known. If anything, his personal demons may have helped to enhance his creativity."

Both Lynd and Wilson say there are many moments of insight into Poe's psyche and spirit.

"The big surprise, I think, for the audience is the discovery that Poe was quite a romantic and a fine wit," Lynd said. "I really wanted to show that side of the dark brooding man we have come to identify him with."

There is one performance only of "Lord, Save My Poor Soul: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe." Tickets are all $10, general admission.
