The Group Rep presents THE CITY by Clyde Fitch, adapted by Stan Mazin and directed by Mazin, opens Friday, January 22, at 8:00 pm at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood. The play runs Friday and Saturday, 8:00 pm, Sunday, 3:00 pm, January 22 through February 28, 2010.

How could Clyde Fitch know his play THE CITY would resonate a 100 years later? Amazingly, this American classic does, loud and clear in this updated version of the original drama - - a drama that could have been ripped from today's headlines.

In THE CITY, George Rand, Jr. seems to have his world by the tail. He has been nominated to run for governor, is engaged to marry, and has watched his sister make an excellent marriage to his private secretary. But matters take a series of ugly turns in this play about the effects of unbridled ambition,
against the backdrop of virtuous small-town life VS corrupting city life.

THE CITY (1909) was written by Clyde Fitch, one of the 20th century's most prominent and notable playwrights. THE CITY, what many of Fitch's critics considered to be his best, was the last play
he wrote. Sadly, Fitch died before it opened. Adding to the buzz, the opening night was one of the most sensational in history, with near pandemonium reportedly breaking out after the line being screamed onstage, "You're a God damn liar!" was heard. "Damn" had been employed before, but never the complete expletive.
