Skirball Cultural Center to Celebrate Tu Thoughts' 15th Anniversary, 10/24
On Friday, October 24, 2014, at 8:00 p.m., the Skirball Cultural Center celebrates indie label Tru Thoughts' 15th Anniversary with performances by Alice Russell, Lost Midas, and The Seshen.
Critically hailed as one of the best soul voices of our time, Alice Russell's unique sound and powerhouse vocals reflect her eclectic influences, which range from Sarah Vaughan to Kate Bush and Alice Coltrane to Bach. At the Skirball, Russell will perform songs from her most recent album, To Dust, described by Rolling Stone as demonstrating "exquisite taste for beats and atmosphere." The BBC raves, "Russell deserves to move from cult concern to a queen of British soul." Opening the show are Russell's label mates and rising stars: L.A.-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Lost Midas and San Francisco electropop/soul band The Seshen.
The TT15 Anniversary Show at the Skirball will come on the heels of the October 21 release of the Tru Thoughts 15th Anniversary Box Set. Limited to 500 copies worldwide, the hand-numbered box sets feature a custom creation by renowned graffiti artist Aroe, three 12" slabs of colored vinyl, two CDs, and a 12"-square booklet of exclusive interviews and photographs. The music was hand-picked by co-owner Robert Luis to celebrate the past, present, and future of the indie label's eclectic and adventurous catalog, including the electronica of Bonobo, Quantic's trailblazing world explorations, Alice Russell's powerhouse soul, New Orleans' iconic Hot 8 Brass Band, UK icons like Rodney P and Zed Bias, and cutting-edge stars of tomorrow Lost Midas, Titeknots, Werkha, and Harleighblu.
