With hopes of inspiring the next generation of performers to follow their dreams and pursue their talents, the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation provides Master Classes for local students as part of their Arts in Education Initiative. On Thursday, April 2nd, the kindergarteners through fifth graders at Pomerado Elementary will host special visitors for a personal Master Class with The Romeros, who celebrate 55 years as the "Royal Family of the Guitar." The Romeros have dazzled audiences worldwide and earned raves from fans and critics. Of The Romeros, the New York Times says, "Collectively, they are the only classical guitar quartet of real stature in the world today; in fact, they virtually invented the format...They are, without a doubt, the grand masters of the guitar."
A family affair, The Romeros includes three generations of musicians. The legendary Celedonio Romero, with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel, founded the internationally-renowned guitar quartet. Together, they have played with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world. The family has been invited twice to play at the White House and has performed for dignitaries worldwide, including Pope John Paul II at Vatican City and Prince Charles of Wales.
Students at Pomerado Elementary will learn first-hand from The Romeros all about the guitar, including different types, sounds and techniques used to play a guitar. They will learn how guitars are made from the inside out and about the different strokes and techniques used to create different types of sounds. The Romeros will demonstrate their extravagant mastery of the guitar by playing music for the children and will also discuss life as a musician in hopes of inspiring budding artists in the audience to continue to cultivate their love for the performing arts. This Master Class is designed to broaden the children's knowledge of the performing arts, thereby enhancing their academic, social and academic growth.
The Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation is a 25 year old non-profit organization that offers professional performing arts events, including concerts, dance performances, theater productions, and a children's theater series. The Foundation operates through a special partnership with the City of Poway and the Poway Unified School District.
