Newman Theatre Features Alexander in THIS WAS MY BERLIN, 2/6

By:

For many, Berlin brings to mind: knockwusrt, beer, and certainly World War II or "Cabaret" because of the movie starring Liza Minneli. First recognized in the 1930's as an art form and likely a version of the Moulin Rouge shows popular in 1890's Paris. Cabaret's influence could be seen in speakeasies, vaudeville, burlesque, and early TV variety shows. Today's cabaret is a mix of many medias but typically one in which a singer interprets songs with their feelings and emotions and adding stories and introductions known as patter to allow them to connect with the audience.

When Christel Alexander began writing her latest show, "This Was My Berlin", it was a way of recalling her life as a child during WWII in Berlin and takes you to present day with "Sixty On The Outside, Twenty On The Inside", as one of her songs tells. She began performing again after taking a long break for family and work, then discovering the cabaret community of Los Angeles that welcomed her at such clubs as Gardenia, Vermont, and Club Ten20. She honed her skills at open mics and various workshops before meeting her musical director, Todd Schroeder, who's fame for guiding some of the biggest names in the music business is legendary, not to mention his own success as a singer, pianist, and producer.

Christel Alexander in "This Was My Berlin" plays for one performance only on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at 2 PM at Arthur Newman Theatre as part of Les Michaels Life Is A Cabaret Series at The Joslyn Center.
