New York-based poets and performers Felix Bernstein and Gabe Rubin, formerly at The Whitney Museum of American Art, will celebrate Burn Book with laptops, guitars, masks, queer personae, lyrical ballads and more at a special MOCA Los Angeles performance on Sunday, May 8.

This multimedia performance by an "awkward, fragile, and imposing" duo encompasses poetry, music, video projection, and performance art. The show will be both melancholic and comedic; nostalgic and prescient.

Bieber Bathos Elegy - Felix Bernstein's musical spectacle inspired by pop icon Justin Bieber - premiered at The Whitney Museum of American Art in January 2016. Directed by his long-time collaborator Gabe Rubin, the show was hailed a critical and commercial success. The Village Voice described the sold out production as presenting "the way our inner lives are increasingly experienced and represented through online detritus." "With the intention of anticlimax, the viewer's gaze was provoked through emotive mythological and pop culture imagery, making time appear non-linear and nostalgically psychotic." Bullett Magazine. "This hybrid work of opera, poetry, cabaret drag and deconstructive criticism features Bernstein as the thinking millennial's poet trying to figure out where lieth the reality in the labyrinth of life." Huffington Post.

Critical Acclaim for Burn Book:

"It's impossible for me not to be troubled and mesmerized by this book's poignant quest for authenticity via hyper-professionally embodied disembodiment." (Wayne Koestenbaum)

"A book performing burns: not suicidal fires but a stream of abrasions on what represents life rather than being it. Bernstein risks the presence that comes from flinging writing into many impossible and agitated scenes. A frottage aesthetics trying to bring life back to life." (Lauren Berlant)

In addition to Bieber Bathos Elegy, Bernstein and Rubin's projects have included Tender Cousins and Boyland. Rubin's album, Wendy and Casper Hauser, is forthcoming. Bernstein is the author of Notes on Post-Conceptual Poetry and Burn Book.

Felix Bernstein and Gabe Rubin multimedia reading at MOCA inspired by Burn Book, Bernstein's latest book of poetry is on Sunday, May 9. For more information: http://bit.ly/1UmVlX0
